My take on this Project

I hope my postings will keep you guys updated on the progress on my part of our project thus far. It has been a crazy few weeks with all the exams around the corner and other projects to work on. I have been constantly keeping updated with Mei Mei and Han Yang on their articles because those are some work I need to input on my part, which is the Component II of the project. Component II requires us to suggest an innovative process to improve the company we'd chosen, which is Pensonic Holdings Berhad. The articles are quite helpful and gave me an insightful on this latest craze on energy-saving devices by many companies globally. This project really improve my understandings on the energy-saving features that many companies are adopting in their products and processes. Pensonic, being a local company might not have the capability to completely change their production processes into producing energy-saving electricla appliances, but the company has shown much potential for better improvement and growth. Therefore, I believed that Pensonic can include this features on its future products. Corporate giants such as GE, Phillips, Epson, Panasonic and Toyota, amongst others, have long discovered the components to produce such devices. It has been an interesting journey to read more on the work of these companies and their contribution towards the society from their technologies and production. It hasn't been easy to understand their technical jargons but it is definitely an eye-opener for me to be able to work on this project. The overall work of the group will be exhibited through the poster which will be designed by Mei Syn. That's all from me for now. I would continue to post up the latest progress on my part for this project. Thank you guys for your great support :)

PDCA Cycle

hey guys...this is one of the models i've chosen as a suggestion to Pensonic Holdings Berhad regarding innovation on their processes to produce energy-saving devices. The PDCA Cycle explained extensively in the textbook, so I won't go in details here. What I would like to comment today is regarding the suitability of using the PDCA Cycle for Pensonic. If there are any questions, please feel free to drop me any comments ok?Alterations might improve our project better :)

The PDCA Cycle consists of Plan-Do-Check-Act. It is a model by one of the founding fathers of modern operations management, Walter A. Shewhart. I think the PDCA Cycle can be adopted by Pensonic as this cycle can easily guide the company to adopt the new production processes successfully. In the Plan stage, the company must identify their capabilities and understand their current production line to enable them to take the next step to implement the new production method. The needs of the market must not be ignored because they form the basis for the profitability of the organization. In the Do stage, the company must implement the best alternative to start including energy-saving features in its products. This will show that the company cares about the community and environment by their effort to reduce wastage of resources and pollution of the environment. Next, the Check stage requires the top management, engineers and technicians to review the results of the implementation. For example, they could be checking for the quality of the new products produced and the how far the products meet the needs of the community. This ensures that the company do not continue to implement something that does not benefit the organization. Lastly, in the Act stage, the company should implement the new innovation organization-wide. This standardization across the organization will help the company as employees are aware of the new structure and facilities of the company. The company also strive for continuous improvements after this implementation. The cycle the goes back to the first step and repeat itself. This model ensures that the company do not stop after the implementation because technology is often improving and competitors will always innovate on new processes. Therefore, Pensonic should keep up to match and compete to gain more market share.

Of course, all these changes will require much more extensive analysis and surveys because the organization might face a big cash outflow before profits can be gained. The company's philosophy and top management support and commitment from all across the organization is needed to bring Pensonic to greater heights. Since the company has a policy for continuous improvements by setting up a Research and Development (R&D), the company can adopt this model to help guide them to achieve this new manufacturing line. Pensonic has its own manufacturing plant located in Penang, and this is an advanatage for the company because it can adopt this change easily compared to other competitors. The company is also able to export its products once successfully implemented.

This is what I suggested as one of the model to be used by Pensonic to produce energy-saving electrical appliances and also to use energy-saving processes in its production line.

More about Pensonic Holdings Berhad

I've searched the information on Pensonic Holdings Berhad and it is interesting to see the firm grow over the last few decades to what it is today. The company has gain much market share from giants such as Panasonic and National brands since its inception.

Pensonic had its beginnings in 1965, with a company named Keat Radio & Electrical Co., a sole proprietor business, which was a retailer for electrical appliance at Balik Pulau, Penang. In 1976, Keat Radio & Electrical Co. went into import, export and wholesaling of electronic and electrical house hold appliances such as audio and visual items like portable radio cassette, transistor radios, and black and white televisions. The sole proprietor business was subsequently incorporated into a private limited company in 1977 under the name of Keat Radio Co. Sdn Bhd. In 1982, Pensonic Sales & Service Sdn. Bhd. was set up with various branches throughout the country to accommodate the increase in business. As business improved and progressed, the company started to import all types of audio and visual products from the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) and marketed them under the “PENSONIC” brand name. In 1988, Pensonic started to manufacture and assemble its own products under the brand, "PENSONIC".

Amongst the products manufactured then were slow cookers, table fans, blenders, thermo- flasks and hair dryers. Since then, PENSONIC has emerged into producing high quality household appliances throughout the country. The name PENSONIC was meaningfully created by its founder, Dato' Seri Chew Weng Khak. The brand name has the distinction of being Malaysia’s very first local branded electric home appliance to be marketed. PENSONIC HOLDINGS BERHAD, now with its subsidiaries is principally engaged in the manufacturing, assembling, wholesaling and trading of electronic and electrical products under the PENSONIC brand.

The trends of growth from this company is inspiring as the management and the owner of the sole proprietorship work to achieve so much success on their own hard work and strategies and planning. Pensonic should strive for continuous growth by improving the products and processes. The company has much room for growth and improvements. This is evident by the company's large manufacturing plant in Bukit Tengah Industrial Park, Penang. I found that the company's success story is inspiring because the company has achieve much in a short period of time. However, investing in the production of energy-saving devices will definitely bring the company to greater heights.

A Little bit more to complete

10 articles; Phillips, Silicon Valley Applied Materials (AMAT), HP, Epson, Air Asia, Alliant Energy, General Motor, General Electric, Greenfleet Car Service, Honda.

These are part of the 20 articles that I've found. The other 10 articles are with my teammate, Han Yang. Well, it is not just about cut and paste which I thought it would be easy at first, but it took alot of my TIME to search for the right companies, the right articles and from the right resources which suit our project title 'Energy Saving Devices'. Throughout our mid sem break during the Chinese New Year holidays, we did not leave our work behind. Instead we (Joann, Han Yang and I) were using most of our time to search for info and complete it so that the next part regarding the poster can be done by Mei Syn,our Creative Manager. Just right after our mid sem exams, we took some time to complete the case study and the solution model. A few meetings were conducted in order to brainstorm some ideas on how to present our project creatively. Personally, the most frustrating period for me was when the wi-fi connection was down like crazy. I guess my teammates are busy with their part as well. BERSABAR la...Little bit more to complete =)

What Solar can do...

Applied's solar strategy includes significantly driving down the overall cost-per-watt, ultimately providing increased and more affordable access to solar. Several recent programs worked to raise awareness of solar as a viable renewable energy alternative. Applied Materials will provide a combination of manufacturing tools, together with technology and process innovations from the flat panel and semiconductor industries, that are expected to enable customers to increase conversion efficiency and yields, helping to lower the overall cost per watt for solar electricity users. Thus, this initiative clearly allows more energy savings.

A Good Learning Process

So far we have only heard of the names like Phillips, Silicon Valley, Epson, HP, Honda and Toyota. However, we do not really know or trully understand what they have contributed to the society and also what are the environment-friendly products that they have innovated. Throughout this CSR project, we took the opportunity to take a step closer to get to know more about these companies that help to produce energy saving devices as well as involving in creating energy saving 'Green Factory' for Epson.
