Do you know that...

Energy consumption is a key decision factor for any lighting solution. Knowing that lighting represents up to 30% of a building's energy consumption, it is clear that remarkable savings in operational cost can be achieved with a good lighting design.
Energy savings can be achieved in different ways:

*Converting standard lamps and/or conventional gear for energy friendly lamps and/or HF ballasts in existing lighting installations

*Complete and integral (renovation) project.
It is clear that re-doing the lighting installation normally generates the highest energy savings but many times even a re-lamping exercise can lead to significant cost reductions.Below all criteria for Lighting System components are listed
Lamps
-To achieve maximum savings one should select the range of lamps that meet the quality requirements such as colour properties, light intensity, etc and then choose the lamp which has the highest efficacy within the group.
Well known energy saving lamps with superior lighting qualities and life times:
~Compact fluorescent lamps instead of incandescent lamps'TL'D Super /80 New Generation series instead of standard 'TL' lamps'TL'5 lamps instead of standard 'TL' lamps
~MASTERline ES halogen lamps instead of standard halogen lamps
~Mastercolour lamps instead of halogen lampsHPI lamps instead of SON-T lamps
Control Gear

Selection criteria
To achieve maximum savings, one should select the range of lamps satisfying the quality requirements such as colour properties, etc. and then select the lamp which has the highest efficacy within the group. Criteria to be considered:

~Light output ratio
~Optical systems (reflectors, louvres, etc.) and their distribution
Range
High efficiency OLC optics for indoor officesPOT optics for road lighting

Automotive
The newer the technology, the lower the energy consumption. This is the rule of thumb for the development of our automotive lighting technologies. Philips products, packaging and the production process are efficient in their energy consumption, waste reduction and environmental-friendliness.

Lighting controls give a greater amount of choice in energy savings. Systems such as day light controls and movement sensors help in using optimum energy while retaining the lighting effects. The following are the lighting control options available for consideration:

~Occupancy sensors switching the lighting when required
~Day light sensors dimming the lighting system according to day light available
~Building management systems.

At Applied Materials, we apply nanomanufacturing technology to improve the way people live.Founded in 1967, Applied Materials creates and commercializes the nanomanufacturing technology that helps produce virtually every semiconductor chip and flat panel displays in the world. The company recently entered the market for equipment to produce solar arrays and energy efficient glass.Applied Materials service products improve yield enhancement and increase nanomanufacturing productivity.

Applied Materials, a leader in chipmaking equipment, is ramping up on solar-panel machines and counting on European regulations for business. For 40 years, Applied Materials has been producing high-precision manufacturing gear for semiconductors and flat-panel displays; now it's racing to sell specialized machines that churn out solar panels more cheaply and in higher volumes than ever before. The immediate goal is to drive down the cost-per-watt of solar electricity by at least 25%—and eventually bring it to parity with conventional sources such as coal and natural gas. "Applied has a history of using technology and smart engineering to lower cost and grow markets," says Chief Executive Mike Splinter. AMAT see a real opportunity to change the cost equation for solar power through adoption of their existing technology and new innovation.

Cause and Effect Diagram

hey guys, it's me again. This time, I would like to update you guys on another model I chose to use for Pensonic Holdings Berhad. It's called the "Cause and Effect Diagram" a.k.a "Fishbone Diagram". The diagram is used extensively to identify the causes of problems and to find a solution to fix it. I think this model applies to Pensonic to help them to identify the current processes and production facilities that they can modify to produce energy-saving electrical appliances. This study should be done by the management and also the people closest to the manufacturing line. It hasn't been easy to draw the diagram on Microsoft Word! However, it was really an eye-opener for me. I really wonder what kind of software that authors use to draw all those complex diagrams and formulas. lol. Ok..let's start on the application of the diagram for Pensonic.

There are four major parts of the diagram as explained in the text. They are machines, methods, materials and manpower. These are then elaborated to identify the problems that might be faced by the organization that stop them from producing energy-saving electrical appliances. Since the company has been in this line for a few decades since its inception in 1965, Pensonic should find it easier to identify the problems faced and to take steps to produce energy-saving devices in its future production. I have identified some of the problems that may be faced by the company after the interview session. The extensive report on the diagram can be obtained from the final report of the assignment. Here, I would like to summarize the report to enable my fellow group members to understand the model and to give their feedback.

After the problems identification is made, the company can study the strengths that they have to include energy-saving features in its future products. By having the advantage of owning their own manufacturing plant, the company will find that it's cost effective to adopt this new product features. The company will be able to monitor the quality and the progress of the implementation closely and to further improve by having more internal research and development done. This can be a golden opportunity for the company to find the best possible way to adopt this new innovation. The company can also look for ways to use energy-saving equipments and machines to produce their products. This will reflect the company's interest in saving the environment by reducing waste of resources. The values of the company should guide the employees that exhibit ethical and caring behaviors.

Sorry guys, I'd tried to paste the diagram here to assist you in understanding the model better but I'm having trouble doing that. So, please refer to the appendices for further details. That's all from me today. Please feel free to comment on the suitability of this model for the project. Thanks! :)
